KABIR

Kabir is a conceptual furniture piece made entirely out of Sheetrock. The piece is derived from the movement of my ancestors. Having been uprooted from their home and seen as less than human, these powerful people manifested a new identity, and beautiful culture despite adversity. As such, I re-evaluated the menial view on sheetrock, an underappreciated material in home building, and gave it a new sophisticated identity; Beautiful furniture.

The form is is a reflection of the ever flowing growth and complexes of black culture and history.

Taking this ideology into consideration, sheetrock as a material had to be formally tested prior to taking on the task of showcasing this heavy topic. As such, a form and material study was conducted.

The final form of the piece was developed using a foam model

The construction phase consisted of meticulously cutting out 52 unique shapes from panels of sheetrock material and securing them in layers at a 35 degree angle.

Once assembled the furniture piece was grinded down to a smoother form

The final form was then sanded and smoothed to a polished finish.
